Who Am I?

Welcome to my homepage! I am a programmer, system administrator, computer technician, photographer, teacher, and student living in Charlotte, North Carolina. I enjoy discussing technology trends, philosophy, and other topics on my blog. I am an avid Linux advocate with an affinity for the OpenSUSE operating system. Perl will always be better than Python. PHP is not dead. Since I created my first website in 2004, I have always been working on some kind of project related to computer science or IT. Read about my near-entirely self-taught career and history here, or check out some of my various software projects here.

What is a Far Away Forest?

The mysterious invisible hand that guides society has laid the concrete of the modern world in the form of a bastille, imprisoning those inside the confines of a jungle- a jungle not of vines but of systems and bureaucracy. Such confines trap its inhabitants, themselves their own jailers. As steel and glass expand outward, the true nature of humankind's place in this world becomes more obfuscated, and the forests from which we once came, and to where we are naturally drawn, become further and further away.

Only when we find that ever-fabled far away forest, will we find the peace and freedom our most distant ancestors knew. Everlasting meaning and the quintessence of life can be discovered only in this place of origin. Give up on the aimless sojourn of modernity, and embark on the quest to find the far away forest....

What is this website?

Today, more and more, the web is shriveling into a managed mess- a landscape controlled by a handful of companies where content is consolidated ever more into social networks and walled gardens. I am constantly asked: why have a website? Why wouldn't you want your code on GitHub? Why would you want your own blog? Why wouldn't you just use the structures already in existence? Why don't you leap at the chance to have publicly accessible versioning tools? Why would you use PERL? Why do you hate python? The answer to these questions is found in the same answer to another question I often receive in regards to many of my coding projects: "Why would you make this? It already exists."

There is far too much apathetic-acceptance in this world- people are much too willing to just adopt the standards, styles, tools, or trends of other's simply because their voice is the loudest. So often, this makes bad tools for the wrong jobs not only the norm, but in fact elevates bad practices and bad thinking to the forefront of human progress. Perfection is brought about through competition, and stability and progress can only be maintained when humanity is working towards goals through parallel channels. Curious? Want to hear more? Feel free to explore this little corner of the Internet, full of my thoughts and opinions.
